Don’t Let these 4 Things Keep You from Getting the Help You Need

The National Institute of Mental Health has found that one in five adults in the United States live with mental illness. Our mental health is just as important as our physical health, however, it doesn’t always receive the same amount of attention. Many experience serious, intrusive symptoms that impact their functioning. Other individuals are struggling with relationship conflict, grief, substance use etc. Whatever is impacting your emotional health, know that help is available. 

Everyone has a story of pain, fear, sadness, or rejection. All of us want relief, a change, control, or treatment. But, you can’t just snap out of what’s draining your energy, hope, and enthusiasm. You deserve help. It takes courage to admit you need help and it can be frightening if you don’t know where to start. If you want to feel better you have to take some actions. 

You may know you need to do something different, but it can be really hard to start. There are many things that can get in our way, these are a few: 

  • Old Habits: These habits may be familiar, but they are likely not serving your best interests. Behaviors, ideas, and even people can sometimes become roadblocks to change. Leaving your comfort zone and letting go of long-standing situations, thinking patterns and relationships can be scary, and even painful. Letting go of old habits is one step toward recovery. You can do it better with a counselor or therapist.Therapy can be helpful in identifying habits that don’t work for you and creating new ones. 
  • Negativity: Negative thoughts and narratives can breed further negativity. This can leave you feeling as if you are in a vicious cycle. Depression has a way of seeing things in a pessimistic light. This can include the way you view yourself, others and the world.  It can be difficult to shift your perspective on your own, though it is necessary to move forward. 
  • Stigma: Seeing a therapist or getting counseling has carried a stigma in the past. This is improving, though some still feel apprehensive. More and more people are becoming aware of the importance of mental health treatment. A large number of people go to therapy, though they may not openly share about it. Counseling is for you and whether you choose to share about it is up to you. Stigma can sometimes get in the way of getting help, thankfully less than before. If this is keeping you from getting the help you deserve you aren’t alone, but you do deserve to feel better.
  • Asking for Help is Difficult: It can be really hard to ask for help, whether it’s from those close to you or from professionals. Our society values going it alone, often sending the negative message that we “should” be able to solve our own problems. This type of thinking keeps us stuck. While asking for help can be difficult it can also open up a world of possibilities. Difficult doesn’t mean impossible. 

Help Beyond the Barriers

In today’s world, it’s easy to feel lost and not know where to turn. There are many barriers to getting help, finding what keeps you from reaching out can help you to move forward. You deserve to feel better about yourself, your life and the world around you.
