Teen and Adolescent Counseling FAQ
Does my teenager need counseling?
Your teen may benefit from counseling if you are noticing that they are having difficulty with their functioning, experiencing difficulty managing their emotions or simply don’t seem like themselves. You know your child better than anyone, regardless of their age, if something seems off therapy may help.
How do I find a therapist for my teenager?
Look for a therapist who specializes in working with teenagers and lists specialties in areas they may be struggling in. For example, if your teen is experiencing a great deal of worry, behavior problems, impulse control etc. look for a therapist who works with their concerns. Check out our providers page for details on what our contracted therapists specialize in.
What if my teen doesn’t want to go to therapy?
It can be difficult when you want your teen to see a therapist and they are not interested. Many teenagers enjoy going to therapy, having someone else to talk to can be appealing for many, but not all. Forcing anyone to go to therapy can be counterproductive, however, if your teen can commit to a few sessions they may find it to be beneficial. Online counseling can be a great compromise in these situations and is available through CCS. If your child is still unwilling you can discuss other options with their primary care doctor and/or school counselor.
