Putting an End to Trauma
Through EMDR
Through EMDR
It is not uncommon for people who have experienced severe trauma to exhibit symptoms associated with PTSD (Post traumatic Stress Disorder). For some people, the impact of severe trauma can be so intense that they feel they are unable to live their lives normally. This can feel overwhelming and isolating, you are not alone, therapy can help.
Trauma and its Impact
Many individuals with trauma-related symptoms will continue reliving their traumatic experience long after it has happened. You may find yourself experiencing nightmares, flashbacks, and insomnia. It also may not be unusual to find yourself experiencing intense reactions when thinking of or being reminded of the trauma you experienced.
Additional symptoms related to PTSD can include; having difficulty working, difficulty completing tasks, feeling jittery, becoming easily startled, irritability and/or outbursts of anger. You may also find yourself withdrawing from others and losing interest in daily activities.
How EMDR Works for People who Have Experienced Trauma
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidenced based treatment approach designed to relieve the distress brought about by traumatic memories. EMDR provides this relief through an eight-phase process with protocols and procedures to be provided only by certified EMDR psychotherapists. This eight-phase approach targets your past trauma, the present situations that trigger distress, and effective ways in which to cope and resolve distress.
During the first three phases of the treatment, your trauma is discussed and your readiness for treatment will be assessed. You will also learn stress reduction techniques that can be applied in between counseling sessions.
During phases three through six you will begin to identify three things: images related to the traumatic event, negative beliefs or perception about self, and the emotions or sensations that arise when the trauma is recalled. These phases can help you to focus on the negative thoughts you experience related to your trauma while your therapist uses EMDR processing sets that may include eye movements, taps, or tones.
Phases seven and eight will prepare you to independently use techniques learned during sessions. Those who finish the eight-phase protocol often report that they are able to maintain their progress between sessions; this can indicate that EMDR therapy has enabled them to effectively process their trauma.
