How to Help Your Child
Live Unafraid (Anxiety/Fear/Phobias/OCD)

It is common for most children to experience fear and anxiety. While it is a normal reaction that becomes useful when handling unsettling and challenging experiences, feeling anxious or afraid can make a child uncomfortable. If their fear is excessive and frequent, it may also stand in the way of their performance and achievements. Many children with excessive fear may also develop certain behaviors that make it more difficult for them to socialize with others.

“Normal” Anxieties and Fears among Children

Children may experience and overcome anxiety at certain stages in their lives. Stranger anxiety may make babies cling to the parent or person they know in the presence of a person they don’t know. Separation anxiety may cause a toddler to have an outburst triggered by anxiety or fear when they see their parents leaving. The fear of the supernatural is commonly expressed by children ages 4 to 6. Most will outgrow this fear to be replaced by anxiety for real dangers such as earthquakes, storms, accidents, etc.

When Do You Step In

You may wish to step in if your child’s fear or anxiety is intense, even when there is no actual or real threat or when their anxiety is making it difficult for them to perform normal activities. For instance, if your child would not take the school bus or your family car because of an intense fear of a car accident, they may refuse to go to school which can create additional problems. Having a social phobia may cause your child to isolate, which can make it difficult for them to make friends. Your child may also manifest unusual behaviors to conceal anxiety, excessive fear of phobia.
