Finding Meaning:
The Life of a Survivor

The road a survivor of major illness travels can be a long one. It starts from being diagnosed with a life-changing medical condition and does not necessarily end after the required treatment has been completed. If you’ve been travelling that road as a survivor, your search for meaning may just be beginning. If you have been through diagnosis and treatment of the disease, it may now be the time to reflect on its significance and purpose, to see who you have become or what you hope to achieve from the experience.

The Healing Process Begins

Life changing medical conditions may automatically alter your interests and priorities. What used to be important to you prior to being diagnosed may become less important afterwards. Taking a break to reflect on your life and deciding what to prioritize can set you on a journey that may challenge you to make changes.

It may be by recognizing and understanding the changes in your life that the healing process begins. You may need to accept the fact that you’re not as you once were and you may never be the same again. Confronting these changes courageously may help you to be prepared to find your new “normal”. Recognizing these changes and having the motivation to face these changes can be a foundation to long-term health.

Finding Meaning with Courage

Living with a life-threatening or chronic illness can be a huge wake up call. Your life can drastically change from the day you were diagnosed and continue to change as you move forward. Though your life may be changing, you can choose how you move on in life. You can be at peace with yourself and work toward understanding the “why’s” and “how’s” of being a survivor. Getting to the point of understanding may enable you to grasp the higher purpose and meaning of your life now and for the rest of your days. Like many survivors, you too may benefit from this principle and may use it in your recovery.
