Bullying: What to Look Out For

Audio Version

Bullying can happen to anyone, though that doesn’t make it any less scary when it is happening to your child. Unfortunately, many children who are being bullied will keep it a secret. This can be done for a variety of reasons such as not wanting to make it worse or feeling like nothing can be done to change their situation.

Regardless of the situation, there are signs and behaviors to look out for that might indicate that your child is being bullied.

Emotional and Behavioral Signs of Bullying

  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Changes in eating patterns
  • Frequent tears or anger
  • Mood swings
  • Feels ill in the morning
  • Becomes withdrawn or starts stammering
  • Becomes aggressive and unreasonable
  • Refuses to talk about what is wrong
  • Begins to target siblings
  • Continually ‘loses’ money or starts stealing

Physical Signs of Bullying

  • Has unexplained bruises, cuts, scratches
  • Comes home with missing or damaged belongings or clothes
  • Comes home hungry

Behaviors Related to School

  • Not wanting to go to school
  • Changes their route to school or are frightened of walking to school
  • Doesn’t want to go to school on the bus
  • School grades begin to fall

Some signs may not be readily recognized. For instance, your child may avoid playing with other children. They may want to be isolated because they are always mocked, ridiculed or shamed for their weight. All these may contribute to their insecurity and anxiety.

What Now?

If you notice any of these signs or behaviors with your child, you may wonder where to turn. While addressing your concerns with the school can be helpful, there can be lasting impacts on your child’s behavior, self-esteem and mental health.

Therapy can help children to process their experiences and learn useful skills to move forward. Bullying does not have to impact their wellness or future.
