All children have the tendency to express resistance when they are particularly hungry, tired, stressed or upset. It’s a normal part of their development process to argue, talk back, reason out, and disobey parents and authorities. But, if your child is constantly hostile, uncooperative, and defiant you may have some serious concerns at hand. Your child may be manifesting symptoms of oppositional defiance disorder (ODD), a persistent behavioral pattern of angry or irritable mood, vindictiveness and defiance towards authoritative figures.
Sometimes, the oppositional nature of children makes it difficult to determine if your child is just strong-willed or actually meets criteria for ODD. Some signs are that your child is openly uncooperative and hostile compared to other children of the same age, easily loses his/her temper, easily gets annoyed, rebels against rules, and is quick to blame others.
The severity of the condition is evident where the unusual behaviors occur. If the symptoms are intensely manifested frequently in multiple settings such as home and school, your child has extraordinary level of oppositional behavior. Seeing your child struggling with the symptoms of ODD can be daunting for you. While your child’s annoying behavior can push your patience to the limits, the impulsive conduct can bring your various feelings to the surface, including guilt, frustration, embarrassment, and insecurities. Your child’s behavior may even scare you.
Oppositional Defiance is a disruptive childhood behavioral pattern that can be effectively managed/resolved. However, not all parents have the tools to respond to what a child with ODD needs. Providing consistent care may help, but early intervention is more important. When left untreated, ODD may develop into more serious conduct disorder such as law-breaking behaviors and self-harm. Without intervention, the progressive symptoms can continue into your child’s adult years to significantly impact his/her relationship, career, and general quality of life.
What your child needs is a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation by a professional. Most experts agree on the potentials of behavioral therapy in helping children with ODD. However, a credible counselor would know what other areas to look into and is able to provide effective help options such as Parenting and Family Psychotherapy, Anger/Conflict Resolution and Child Counseling. All these are designed to aid you and your child in managing the undesirable symptoms of opposition defiance.
