Anger can be a normal feeling for everyone, including children. It can be a healthy and useful emotion that adults can use to gauge a child’s ability to weigh what they feel to be fair or unfair. But when a child experiences anger at the slightest provocation, too frequently, for no apparent reason, or if the manifestation is excessive, it may be important to explore what is triggering the child’s anger. Not all anger is healthy and could be a sign of depression.
Depression is not as common among children as compared to adults, though it can affect them just as much. Certain studies have shown that about 4 in every 100 (4%) preschoolers and 10 in every 100 (10%) school aged children can be affected by depression. Studies also show that 2 out of 100 (2%) suffer from major depression. The statistics are higher for children older than 12 or after puberty.
Such statistics can make it even more important to know the signs and symptoms of depression in children. When several of these symptoms are experienced by your child, seeking the help of a professional who can assess your child’s unique symptoms could be a wise choice.
A sign to watch for, and a symptoms of depression, is feeling excessively sad. If you begin to notice a change in your child’s behavior, or if you find yourself saying “he/she used to be a happy child”, you may want to take note. A depressed child would likely be withdrawn, avoiding everyone and everything that used to be a source of fun or enjoyment. Your child may also exhibit changes in eating, sleeping, concentration and temper as well.
Being angry is just one of those changes that may alarm you, but being resentful most of the time and venting out their anger in a damaging ways could indicate that your child may be experiencing symptoms of depression. Aside from these signs and symptoms, other manifestations that they may exhibit are: irritability, feeling exhausted most of the time, and/or feeling hopeless or helpless.
Children have limited understanding of what is happening in their minds or bodies. They may just helplessly submit to negative feelings day in and day out. Many undiagnosed children have been labeled as defiant when the behavior has actually been a sign of depression. As a result, children can become more depressed or have difficulty in realizing their full potentials as they grow up.
