How Can Marriage Counseling Help Anxiety
Anxiety is a negative emotion that can powerfully overwhelm you. Ignored and untreated, this can slip into a more intense anxiety disorder, a complex emotion that can potentially breed many other negative thoughts and feelings impacting important relationships. A wife or husband crippled by intense anxiety disorder due to a buried trauma experienced as a child can be released in the form of misdirected anger and mistrust to one’s spouse.
Reemergence of Anxiety
If you had a bitter past that has been pushed back because of the many positive changes in your life, you may think it’s all gone now. It can resurface once triggered by current stressors. If the economic crisis made you lose your job or caused your business to collapse, your sense of security can be seriously affected more than you care to accept.
Men who became dependent to their wives after losing their business or job, and women who lost their empowerment and financial independence are as susceptible. If you have built a sense of security on your career or business, its downfall can hit you hard. Other stressors – infidelity of your spouse, a debilitating disease or even obesity - can trigger and release your latent anxiety.
Journeying with Anxiety
Your traumatic past can be reinforced by negativities, but they can also be repressed because a lot of positive experiences came into your life. You can be journeying with your anxiety without your knowledge. Without any intervention, it is possible it is just lurking behind ready to jump at you when you are most vulnerable.
Once you sense feelings of mistrust, insecurity and fear, take heed; these can be warning signals that your anxiety is resurfacing. If you sense you are not being properly treated by your spouse (maybe he/she may not be even aware of the change brought on by work stress) or you are stressed by some domestic or work-related factors, anxiety can trigger suspicion, jealousy, distrust, even anger, sadness and hurt.
You have to stop running from your past as it will just continue to chase you for the rest of your life. If you were not able to face it as a child (feeling like you have no control over your life), as an adult whose marriage (and family) is threatened by your past, it is time to address the issues now. Talk to one of our marriage counselors at Carolina Counseling Services to help you uncover your anxiety and resolve it.
Don’t let your past loom over your present. Free yourself from built up anxiety, frustration and anger and move forward. Build resilience and use it to rebuild your trust to others with the help of a Carolina Counseling Services therapist so you can face current challenges and whatever may come in the future. We look forward to working with you!
