Finding Meaning in the Constant Changes of Military Family Life
A military life isn’t always the easiest choice you can make for yourself and your family. You may be perpetually consumed by worry as your spouse is deployed for long months on end and as you and your family adjust to numerous PCS moves. There be nothing you can do to change this; deployments and PCS are natural components of military life, though your perspective is within your control. You can find meaning in your military life, beginning to find the best in military life for yourself and for your family.
Marrying Into the Military
There are many things that you may not know about the military if you are new to the military lifestyle. Love is an important factor in any marriage, especially when marrying into the military as there are unique components that can make your life together more difficult.
Like any marriage, it can succeed, but it can take work. In a military marriage, that love may truly need to be the “unconditional” type, allowing you to find meaning sacrifice. This sacrifice may apply to many things that could be important to you – a stable job or a career you are passionate about, family, friends, constancy, and/or stability.
Duty as a Priority
It may feel as if your spouse’s duty often comes before your marriage. If you are living a military lifestyle, you have to concede that your beloved’s duty comes first. You may find it hard to accept that at times duty may take precedence over you, your marriage and your children. Due to PCS moves you may find yourself making a great deal of sacrifices in order to support your spouse and their career. Aside from your own personal sacrifices, it may also be difficult to watch your children make the same sacrifices to allow their active duty parent to pursue a career in the military.
How to Find Meaning in Your Military Life
It can be inspiring to know your spouse is serving their country and to be a part of something larger than yourself. Love and respect for you and your partner’s dedication and what you both believe in may make it easier for you to make sacrifices.
Considering all the challenges, however, this may be easier said than done. When you are overwhelmed with all of these things, it would be beneficial to engage in therapy with a licensed, independently contracted therapist. Call Carolina Counseling Services in Fayetteville NC today to schedule your first appointment and begin to embrace and find meaning in living a military lifestyle.
