Engaging in Marriage Counseling to Manage Anger and Frustration
Your marriage may be faced with certain issues at one time or another. Your spouse may commit an action that offends, even hurts you. While it is natural to feel hurt, angry and frustrated, you must find a way to resolve the conflict between you. Resolving the conflict and forgiving your spouse is a great choice if you want to have a happy marriage and family. It is important to address and resolve the issue so the problem does not happen again.
Not properly addressing the issue will never resolve it, and it will never be forgotten. When there is no closure, there is a good chance it will just stay at the back of your mind fueling anger and frustration and feeding distrust, resentment and insecurity. These feelings may consume you and these will manifest in your outward behavior. It can make you anxious, even depressed. In short, you will be miserably unhappy in your marriage so that sooner or later one of you might want a divorce.
Resolving Issues Together
When you have a good relationship with your spouse, you can calmly and diplomatically talk about problems, no matter how painful it can be. Unfortunately, not all couples are capable of dialogue without ending in a shouting match. If yelling can help resurface undisclosed issues, it is cathartic. It can help you move towards the next stage of problem solving.
Heated arguments, however, can be damaging when past mistakes are brought up. One starts to blame the other while the other, on a defensive stance, would hurl insults to inflict pain. If your confrontations are ineffective, it is time to get a neutral marriage counselor both of you can trust.
Confronting Issues with a Marriage Counselor
Once your clashes precariously borders on violent behaviors or incites hurting, abusive words, this may be a sign that you are not able to resolve your marital conflicts on your own. These kinds of clashes can only sabotage your ability to resolve issues, damage trust, mar intimacy, and fuel anger and frustration. What you need is a marriage counselor or therapist with problem solving skills that can help you understand where each is coming from, and become experts at preventing problems, resolving conflict quickly, and enjoying your life together.
A good marriage counselor can make you both understand the root causes of the anger and frustration. Those unresolved issues in the past can be resurrected to give it proper closure. Those words and feelings that were bottled up can be released productively under the guidance of the therapist. In other words, you’ll have a second chance to heal your wounds rather than let it hound you for the rest of your life.
A Second Shot to a Happy Marriage
No marriage is perfect. Even the best people can have distorted opinions of what is right or wrong when emotions blur their judgment. Even a good relationship can be threatened by trials and mistakes. Getting angry is normal especially when there is a justifiable reason, but staying angry and frustrated for an extended time is not healthy in a relationship.
If you have tried solving your conflicts, but it is making matters worse, contact Carolina Counseling Services for help. We have therapists that specialize in marriage counseling. Let us help you put an end to your anger and frustration so you can start rebuilding a happy marriage.
