Developing Discipline Strategies with a Professional
You may have met parents who have raised self-disciplined and successful children and wondered how they did it. Don’t be discouraged if you will learn that there is no single “hard and fast rule” about child discipline because each is unique. So, what is the appropriate discipline for your child? To determine the kind of discipline that would be most appropriate for your son/daughter, it would be helpful to consult a professional.
The Value of Discipline
Practicing positive discipline is important if you want your child to gain skills useful in achieving their life goals. It supports healthy development and promotes self-control. It teaches him/her make thoughtful decisions and good choices. It instills right values to feel responsible for his/her actions. It helps your child manage anxiety and other emotions. Ultimately, discipline helps your child stay safe and positive. If discipline is positive, consistent and age- and temperament-appropriate, it will work as you hope it would.
Your Role in Instilling Discipline
It is normal to think that you are responsible for your child’s happiness. You do have some influence over this of course, but one of your greatest responsibilities is to get him/her ready for adulthood. Keeping your child happy and applying discipline may prove to be very challenging most of the time. When these two goals clash (and oftentimes they do), you must be ready to favor discipline even if it brings pain to you. Giving in can make things easy (in the short term) for both of you, but this will show inconsistency and “wishy washy”, unreliable behavior on your part. Remember that when you model inconsistency and unreliability, this is a strong influence for your child to act this way. This is why it is helpful to have a counselor or professional therapist to help you develop the appropriate discipline strategies.
Appropriate Discipline Defined
While discipline may make your child hurt for not getting what he/she wants, it will be effective when the strategy you use is age- and temperament-appropriate. Your child is unique. His/her temperament can affect the way he/she will respond to your type of discipline. Hence it is important to understand temperament – easy and flexible; insecure and cautious, or active, feisty and difficult.
The Role of a Professional Therapist/Counselor
Since understanding your child’s temperament is critical, it is best to work with a licensed therapist or counselor to make sure you are correctly assessing your child’s temperament and applying appropriate discipline. If you are an inexperienced parent or if you want to increase the chance of success, finding help is critical. Without learning and acquiring valuable skills, your son/daughter will be vulnerable to failure all throughout life.
Loving your child excessively has its pitfalls; don’t let it be a stumbling block to his/her healthy development. Carolina Counseling Services can help you develop the appropriate discipline strategies for your child. Get an appointment with us and watch your child bloom into a person who is ready to face future challenges.
