The First Holidays after PCS
For most people, the holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year. But, for military families, it’s usually the worst time to get a PCS. It means leaving behind friends and other loved ones, and spending the holidays in an environment where everyone and everything doesn’t look familiar. Even though your core family is intact, it’s still different than celebrating with your parents, siblings, or old friends and all that comes with the holidays. As the powerful emotions hit you, there isn’t much you can do but face the challenge on how to put up a festive mood.
Embracing the Holidays as a Military Family
Experts reveal that, next to divorce and loss of a loved one, relocation is ranked as the third highest cause of stress for military families. It becomes a reality and more complicated when moving happens around the holidays, which means being uprooted from an old, comfortable home to leave many holiday memories behind. The transition may consign you and the children to a plethora of worries, emotions and concerns.
It is important to remember that the holidays can be observed anywhere your family is located. Even if you can’t replicate the traditions and experiences from your hometown, your family can always start something new to celebrate the holidays in a manner just as fun back home. But, if you or a family member feels persistently lonely and hopeless about having a happy, holiday season, seeking counseling may offer benefits.
Getting through the Holidays with Help
Whether a PCS is served on holidays or any time of the year, it is a journey military families have to embark on accompanied by issues and challenges. Although there are resources provided by the military to support the affected families, you may want to consider other options outside the installation.
This season, instead of enduring all the emotional difficulties on your own, think about what help you can use to get you through. The holidays are not the best time to have any psychological and emotional symptoms. Talk about your feelings to someone you can trust to understand you.
