Anger in Children:
When Should You Take a Second Look?
When Should You Take a Second Look?
Audio Version
Children are thought to be happy and carefree, which can make them a source of joy in your home. When your child seems to be constantly irritable and/or seems unable to manage everyday challenges at home or school, you may want to give your child’s anger a second look. Outbursts could possibly be a symptom of something more than anger, such as depression or anxiety.
Acting out in Anger
A child experiencing depression may not exude the same cheerfulness or lightheartedness common in many young people. Instead, your child may appear to be sad or uninterested in the usual things that would make them happy such as toys, games, friends, etc. If your child is depressed, you may note other symptoms including changes in eating and sleeping patterns, unexplained physical pains, and/or a tendency to avoid people.
When children have depression they are more likely to have problems focusing and performing well in school. Symptoms can be easily misunderstood, your child may be more likely to be punished which could further induce sadness and confusion. Not understanding what is happening, your child may express their dissatisfaction, frustration and confusion in the best way they know how – anger.
Don’t be Afraid to Act
Ignoring your child’s depressive symptoms or not responding with urgency could cause your child further suffering and pain. Discussing your concerns with your child’s pediatrician or teacher can be helpful. There could be even more benefit from seeking out a professional counselor to ensure that your child receives proper treatment if needed.
Depression is treatable, particularly if it is diagnosed early. Unfortunately, if depression is left untreated symptoms will likely increase and even worsen. Early intervention can make a world of difference.
How Can Counseling Help?
Though the foremost concern is your child, know that your child’s depression can cause other members of the family to be affected as well. If you have other young children, they too may sense and feel the impact of depression. You may also notice that you are impacted as well.
