Help! I’m Addicted to ChatGPT

Audio Version

For years, people joked about turning to “Doctor Google” whenever racing thoughts, sleep disturbances trickled in, or feeling something was off. You’d type in your symptoms and suddenly be overwhelmed with endless possibilities, often leaving you more anxious than you started.

But with the rise of AI tools like ChatGPT, things are getting much more intense. Unlike Google, ChatGPT talks to you. It’s conversational, kind, and responsive. You can ask one question, then another, then another, without judgment. Suddenly, you’ve gone down a rabbit hole of information, advice, and “what ifs.”

And while AI can be incredibly helpful, it can also become addictive.

Why ChatGPT Feels So Hard to Put Down

AI feels engaging because it mimics real conversation. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, technology can feel more approachable than traditional resources, making it easier to seek answers and reassurance.

Here’s why it’s so easy to stay hooked:

  • Instant feedback: You don’t have to wait for answers.
  • Non-judgmental space: No question feels “stupid.”
  • Personalization: The more you ask, the more connected you feel.
  • Positive reinforcement: AI often responds with encouragement, which can feel validating.

The downside? It can make it harder to disconnect, and sometimes, you may start leaning on it more than real human connection.

When Curiosity Turns Into Compulsion

It’s one thing to enjoy exploring AI. It’s another when it starts to interfere with your life. Some signs to look out for include:

  • Spending hours each day talking to AI instead of people
  • Difficulty focusing at work or school
  • Using AI to cope with stress instead of healthier strategies
  • Feeling anxious or restless when you’re not using it

Excessive reliance on technology can contribute to stress, anxiety, and avoidance of real-world problem solving. Though it is helpful and comforting it also allows us to avoid getting the help we need.

Creating a Healthier Balance

If you’ve found yourself saying, “I might be a little too attached to ChatGPT,” you’re not alone. The good news is, there are healthier ways to use technology without letting it take over.

Here are some strategies:

  1. Set boundaries –  Decide when and how long you’ll use AI tools.
  2. Prioritize human connection – Call a friend, talk to a counselor, or engage in real life activities.
  3. Notice triggers – Do you turn to AI when you’re anxious, lonely, or bored?
  4. Seek support – If it feels like it’s too much, professional help can provide tools to regain balance.
