Going to Family Counseling Together
The family is considered a unique social system that offers companionship, security, and a great measure of protection to its members. As such, it is always expected to be the wellspring of support, strength, love and concern, in good and bad times. However, the ever-changing lifestyle and mobility can challenge the integrity of your family. The advent of family problems is a normal, everyday occurrence even in the healthiest of households. But, when left unattended, these complications can become the source of painful interactions or conflict among family members.
When Family Problems Set Foot at Your Home
Evidence of family problems can be seen in the distressing dynamics that show members do not get along very well with each other. The cycle of family conflicts at home can give rise to the most intense emotions that you and other members are not even aware to have. How frustrating for parents like you to see the never-ending saga of sibling rivalry between your children? How often have you been called to your child’s school to talk about his/her dramatic behavioral shifts? Are you experiencing difficulties adjusting as a blended-family?
It is true there is no such thing as a perfect family. Each member possesses different personalities and needs that should be nurtured, understood, and supported within the protective frame of the family. When not met, it can be easy for family issues and conflicts to result. It does not make sense to leave conflicts to eat away your family. If not resolved, they can conclude to things like divorce or domestic violence. When repressed, they can result to emotional and behavioral issues that can further detach the members from each other. Either way can make your family crumble. You wouldn’t want that, would you?
Saving Your Family
Pulling the family out of a difficult conflict is considered a parental responsibility. If only it was just that easy! Experts believe that resolving issues must be a concerted family effort. Members need to collaborate and become a team with unified strength to fight family problems. That is why it is beneficial to seek Family Counseling to find a peaceful resolution to the internal conflicts at home..
According to research, professional counseling has been proven to significantly improve marital and familial relationships as well as the physical and emotional health of family members. Family counseling is based on the belief that problems or conflicts cannot be entirely blamed on just a single family member*. It is designed to help the entire family to fully arrest all the symptoms affecting the entire structure. When the underlying causes have been identified, Family Counseling can help the family develop conflict resolution strategies. This does not only help resolve issues, it also strengthens the family bond.
*It is important to note that although all family members may contribute to the issues, if insurance is to be used to pay for family counseling, then one person must be the “identified client.” Health insurance pays for the health of an individual (not a family) and will cover family counseling if there is one family member who becomes the client (who meets criteria for a diagnosis such as depression, anxiety, etc.) Family members accompany that client to sessions. That is what insurances identify as “family counseling”.
