When Oppositional Defiance Has Gone Beyond what is Acceptable
Years ago, your teenage daughter gave you a hard time with her defiant attitude. She challenged your authority. She never followed your rules. She embraced her “independence” beyond what is acceptable for her age. Like any parent, you were aghast, maddened, furious, but you’re happy when she turned out to be a thoughtful, caring and responsible daughter when she became an adult.
Now, you are again faced with the same dilemma with another adolescent child –maybe a son. Will you just let him be and assume that his defiance is simply dictated by his strong desire to be independent? Or should you worry that it is a symptom of a behavioral issue and that he needs to be helped with?
Being Oppositional once in a while is within Normal limits
Even well-behaved children may manifest oppositional attitudes from time to time or at certain stages in his/her development. They may occasionally talk back, defy you, give you the cold treatment, even rant or scream when they are tired, stressed, hungry or upset. An emotional or strong willed-teen may demonstrate the behavior more often, and that is normal. Just because your son or daughter returned from school irritated and uncooperative doesn’t mean he/she has an issue. It is, however, necessary to distinguish the difference between being oppositional because he/she is strong-willed and sensitive and struggling with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD).
Chronic Oppositional Defiance Needs Attention
If the behavior is consistent and it is starting to affect the teen’s relationship with everyone in the family or you are often summoned in school, look into the matter closely. Try to observe if your child is manifesting other symptoms such as:
- Consistently irritable and resentful
- Unnecessary arguments with adults or authority figures
- Questions and defies rules
- Disobeys commands and refuses to act in accordance with rules
- Deliberately challenges rules to upset or annoy adults
- Blames others for his or her blunders or misbehavior
- Quick-tempered and is easily annoyed by situations/people
- Talks back meanly once upset
- Retaliates and with vindictive attitude
If he/she exhibits several (4-5) of the symptoms, it will be to your child’s best interest to consult a therapist. You can best help your child when you know what parenting style would be good for him/her. You also need a professional therapist to make a diagnostic evaluation on your child so he/she can be provided with appropriate help and treatment.
Take Matters Seriously
Ignoring your teen’s struggles can destroy his/her studies as well as relationships with people around him/her – the siblings, classmates, friends, teachers, etc. These can leave him/her feeling worse, more vindictive and oppositional, which can lead to long term difficulties in relationships and possible future employment.
Helping your adolescent may involve therapy, learning certain skills and having parents who know and use appropriate parenting techniques to manage behaviors and to help build positive family interactions. Don’t forget that you don't have to go through this trying period alone; Carolina Counseling Services can help. Call for appointment. We are just a call or text away.
