Overcoming Seasonal Affective Disorder to Enjoy the Changing Seasons
Is your mood changing as the seasons change, or is it just your imagination? If you haven’t heard of “seasonal affective disorder” or SAD, you may notice the relationship, but may have no idea how or why it happens.
The Autumn-Winter SAD
SAD is actually a type of depression. It coincides with the seasonal changes, hence the name. It is also called “cabin fever” in Alaska, being the kind of depression that is associated with the sunless and desolate days of autumn and winter. As the seasons start, be prepared for the gloomy days ahead. But, if you have SAD, brace up for more distressing signs and symptoms of depression.
Is there such a thing as SAD that occurs in spring or summer? Yes, there is and it occurs more often during summer than spring. About 10 percent of those with SAD have this type. According to Dr. Ian Cook of UCLA (Depression Research Program), it can either have a biological cause or it is triggered by summer stresses. He also said that this type is more prevalent in countries near the equator where there is no winter.
The Science Behind Autumn-Winter SAD
The connection between SAD and the short days during autumn and winter, or the long and hot days of summer are still not fully established. For the cabin fever, there is a theory that it has something to do with the inadequate amount of sunlight during the seasons. The lack of sunlight can cause the hypothalamus, a part of the brain, not to function well. Specifically, inadequate sunlight can cause the brain to produce more melatonin, less serotonin, and disrupt the circadian rhythm or biological clock. All these can cause you to feel depressive symptoms.
For summer SAD, it is suspected that the depressive symptoms - loss of appetite, weight loss, difficulty sleeping, and other symptoms of anxiety – are triggered by the sweltering heat and the high humidity. Some of the complicating factors can be body-image and weight issues as dressing in skimpier clothing becomes the rule than the exception in summer, financial issues to support a summer getaway, and of course the sweltering heat that can be extremely uncomfortable.
