Naming Your Fear
Most of us experience fear when something is perceived as a threat to us or to our loved ones. This kind of worry can be normal, even when the feeling is unpleasant. When the feeling of fear, however, becomes constant or overwhelming, disrupting your day to day life and/or deterring you from performing normal functions, it may no longer be considered “normal”. It may be time to take action to eliminate this extreme, and possibly unreasonable, fear that may be disrupting your life.
The Danger of Being Worried at All Times
If you are persistently experiencing chronic anxiety, though feel that your worries are excessive or even unreasonable at times, you may be experiencing symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Anxiety can be a warning that you are in danger, allowing you to adapt to the situation accordingly. In contrast, GAD may not alert you to anything specific, possibly leaving you to feel at a loss as to how to put an end to your fear.
As a result, you may become anxious about a wide range of situations and issues, leading to feeling stressed and possibly even impaired at times. You may feel as if you are always in a state of anticipation, fearing that bad things are about to happen. While you trying to cope with your fears, others may see you as disturbed, high-strung, and/or phobic.
Putting Your Fears Behind You
Like many people with GAD, you may try to protect yourself from your perceived threats by exercising a great deal of control over your life, implementing maladaptive strategies to manage your fears. These strategies may cause you to feel relief initially, though may create more anxiety in the long run. For example; avoiding situations that cause anxiety. This may be a relief initially, however, the next time you are faced with the anxiety provoking situation you may find that your anxiety has grown.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder can be a long-term condition that may cause you to feel constantly pressured about a variety of things. Symptoms can be lessened or worsened depending on the ways used to counter your anxiety and fears. Therapy can be an effective way to combat symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Psychotherapy approaches can include a variety of approaches proven to be successful in calming the body and mind.
