Journeying through Grief for Parents and Families
Because death is inevitable, all families will, at one time or another, suffer the loss of a loved one. However, though grief is a painful journey, it is one where healing can take place. It is also an experience that can build stronger bonds among those who are still living.
When tragedy strikes people, the grief they experience does not take a simple, straightforward route, and it is important to accept grief as a normal reaction for parents when they lose a child or for families when they lose a member. More than that, grieving is in fact a process that is necessary for healing. People who do not allow themselves to grieve are vulnerable to depression, and frequently their heartbreak can rear its ugly head later and cause them to commit impulsive, even self-destructive acts.
The Pace of Grief
People grieve at their own pace, and there is neither a structure nor a timeframe for people to finally move on from their personal loss. This makes it sometimes hard to see when grief is just running its course or when the people experiencing it have become unable to rise from it.
For example, with parents who have lost a child, grief can be an overwhelming process, and it is often necessary for couples going through it to seek professional help so that their pain can be eased, even if their loss will always be a reality. Some couples are able to find comfort in the presence of someone for whom the grief is just as intense, but some are unable to draw closer to each other when a child dies.
Finding the Light at the End of the Tunnel
Parents and family members often grieve differently from one another, and it is important for everyone to understand the way each one expresses (or hides) grief. Some are plainly devastated, some disconnect from others, while some seem to almost callously move on. It is not always possible for a family to support one another in times of grief because each one is in the same position. If this is not understood by everyone, those who try to reach out to their siblings or their spouses for support can meet with a lot of frustration and even feel rejected.
If you and/or a family member are grieving, take courage in the fact that you do not have to go through it alone. At Carolina Counseling Services, there are skilled and sympathetic counselors who can help grieving people release pent-up emotions, verbalize their anxiety, and give voice to the sadness that is consuming them. This is where families and parents can receive the reassurance they need so that they can truly heal, emerge from their sorrow, and appreciate what life still has to offer.
