Insomnia/Nightmares: When Teens Count Sheep
There are important brain and body functions that happen in sleep. These are why young people - children and teens - need more hours of sleep. According to nationwide Children’s Hospital, adolescents need to sleep for 9 to 9 ½ hours. Unfortunately, many teens only get about 7 to 7 ¼ hours of sleep.
Factors that deprive teens of sleep include bigger social and school obligations, earlier start of classes in high school, and the hormonal shift in their biological clock as they near adulthood. Two other reasons that cause your teenaged child to be sleep-deprived may be insomnia and nightmares.
Insomnia can cause your teenager sleeplessness. It is a sleep disorder that makes falling and/or staying asleep extremely hard. If you have an adolescent child who is showing signs of insomnia, it is important to seek professional help to avoid long-term negative effects on your child.
Moreover, insomnia can’t be ignored because it can also indicate certain episodes of emotional upheaval, a chronic or a major life stress, depression and/or anxiety. These can complicate your child’s sleep deprivation and create a pattern that will be difficult to overturn.
Nightmares: Dreading Sleep Time
Having occasional bad dreams or a nightmare is normal. If it happens with such frequency that your teenager fights sleep or try to stay awake to keep the nightmares at bay, it has now become an important sleep issue that you must take up with a qualified practitioner.
Note that nightmares can be related to some deep-seated negative feelings and thoughts brought about by a traumatic experience, certain fears, phobias or anxieties, a major life transition or a depressive/extreme pressure from school or family. If these are causing your child to have nightmares, a qualified licensed therapist can help.
Preventing Sleep Deprivation
Sleep deprivation can make your child struggle academically with limited ability to stay focused, analyze and solve problems, as well as recall, absorb and retain information. Your teen can have a weaker immune system and becomes more vulnerable to acne (that can add up to his/her worries), infections and other ailments. It may also make him/her cranky and short-tempered.
