Who hasn’t experienced to be emotionally overwhelmed, when everything seems too much to handle? Whether it’s due to a fast-moving experience, a failed relationship, too much change in your life too fast, too much information to digest, or feelings experienced during a solitary moment of reflection, the state of emotional overwhelm can happen to you or anybody at some point in time.
Everything Seems to Happen All at Once
When you’re overwhelmed, you feel like being tossed around inside a basket. Everything is happening so quickly there’s barely enough time for you to process or evaluate and respond appropriately. You tend to lose touch with your own state of being, as if you’ve bitten too much and cannot swallow the events transpiring before you. How can you calm yourself from the intense feeling so you can sort things through and make sense of everything?
Identifying the Consuming Cause
Before the intense feeling can be stopped, it’s important to recognize the signs of overwhelm. If you often react emotionally to the smallest requests and think that people are taking advantage of you, you’re overwhelmed. When you feel you cannot handle what used to be simple tasks that suddenly become monumental, you have an overwhelming issue. Your mind is unable to function in its usual accuracy, making it harder for you to think or move cohesively.
These are just a few classic ways to tell you’re overwhelmed. Unfortunately, being overwhelmed makes you incapable of evaluating and stating your needs which hinders you even further! Even if the signs are blatant enough, it’s difficult to surrender and accept the fact that you are indeed overwhelmed.
The Choice is Yours
It’s important to know that your condition is not unique. Everyone gets overwhelmed from time to time, especially in this age where your attention can be inundated by information and other commercial interests. There is your “true self” waiting to be released from the overwhelming feelings. Being honest with yourself is the first step to take if you want to rise above your present situation. It’s never too late to cultivate the best choice and take the most appropriate action based on what you need.
Get Help to Lift the Weight
When you’re overwhelmed, it can be hard to share private thoughts and feelings for fear that no one will understand you. But, talking to someone can help you unburden the load, sort things out, resolve some contributing issues and get you through this time. It could be your family or friends because you trust them. However, it can be easier to talk about your intense feelings with someone who doesn’t know you, won’t hold anything against you and won’t tell other people things that you don’t want them to know.
At Carolina Counseling Services, you’ll meet our friendly and non-judgmental counselors who are ready to listen and talk to help clear your mind and see life in hopeful perspective. It might be hard to believe there are people you don’t even know who will care enough to help you. Call Carolina Counseling Services to request an appointment. It’s time to meet these people.
