Coupling Medical Treatments and Psychotherapy for Mood Disorders
It’s normal to experience mood swings (or fluctuations in mood) that may last for some minutes or longer. When the fluctuations happen more often, episodes extend for a longer time, and these start to affect your inner balance, it can be a “mood disorder.” Note that mood disorder can also be a mild symptom of more serious psychological problems; this is why it is most important to give your condition preferential diagnosis and treatment.
While you may want to get away from pills and other medical treatments, it is important to understand that it may be important in your case, Know, however, that in many cases of mood disorder, medical treatments can be coupled with psychotherapy for optimal treatment and faster recovery.
The Optimal Treatment Approach
Research shows that medical treatments coupled with effective counseling can significantly improve your condition when you are diagnosed with mood disorder. If you have a recurring illness that requires long-term preventive treatment, a strategy integrating both is optimal for regulating mood disorder over time.
Studies revealed that medications work better with an appropriate psychotherapy. If you have decided to seek help from a medical practitioner, it is a good thing to discuss with him/her about combining therapy for an optimal treatment approach.
Watching Out for the Alarming Signs
If you feel sudden changes in your disposition or frame of mind, pay attention to them. Know the symptoms of mood disorder - restlessness, loss of interest and enjoyment in usual activities. You may also exhibit alternate episodes of mania/elation when increased energy is displayed and depressive behaviour of hopelessness and sadness during the low mood state.
If this goes untreated, you may manifest other symptoms such as psychosomatic pain and gastrointestinal problems leading to eating disorders and loss of weight. Mood swings can also interfere with your daily activities, job and relationships. At worst, the disorder can slip into full blown depression or bipolar disorder. If the mood disorder has gone to this extreme, consider getting a medical treatment coupled with psychotherapy for a faster recovery.
The Need for Help
Your mood disorder may have shown discernible signs during your teenage or early adult years, but you may have ignored them until of late when they have gotten worse. If you have ignored the symptoms because you do not fully comprehend them or you are afraid of being misunderstood or rejected, it is not too late to seek help.
At this point, however, it becomes more critical to combine treatments so you can recover from this psychological malady faster. The medical treatments can help correct chemical or hormonal imbalances and alleviate your body of psychosomatic symptoms. Therapy, with the right practitioner, can help you understand your feelings and thoughts while learning certain skills to better manage your moods.
