Your child’s noise, laughter and recklessness used to annoy you, particularly when you can’t concentrate on what you are reading or watching. You miss that. These days, you hardly see him/her happy. Maybe your child is now always in their room avoiding everyone, rather than being their “spiteful” self. Maybe your child is refusing to go to school or overeating. Is there a reason for you to be alarmed?
You just described a few signs and symptoms of child depression, but it is important to know for sure. Your child may simply be grieving over the recent death of a pet or is perhaps unhappy about school. Depressed or just sad, hurt or hopeless, you need to pay attention to these signs. If they are indeed suffering from depression, the sooner your child gets treatment, the better. Only a diagnostic evaluation performed by an expert can confirm your suspicion.
It is never easy for your child to understand their wrought feelings or thoughts. Since they can’t explain how they feels, your child may act it out. That may mean expressions of hurt, sadness or hopelessness may be displayed through anger and outbursts. Negative feelings may also be manifested through mood swings, even breaking things and violence. Your child may not sleep or eat well and even lose interest on things that used to bring much enjoyment.
At school, anger or fighting may be exhibited with other children or possibly refusing to participate in activities. Some children may hurt themselves; don’t wait for that to happen to your child. Seek professional help as soon as you have observed more signs of depression.
Depression is not a teen or adult thing. Depression, extreme sadness, hopelessness and hurt can happen to children; your child is as vulnerable as anyone. The exact origin is not really known or easy to explain. It can be due to a chemical imbalance in the brain. It can be hereditary. It can be a learned behavior when there is a parent who has a negative outlook. It can be perception by your child based on how they think. It may also be triggered by a stressor like bullying, an ailment, a friend moving out, death of a pet or someone she loves.
Even if your child will reject you, don’t walk away because now is the time that help is needed. Provide a positive environment that’s caring and encouraging. Provide reassurance that he/she is worthy to be loved, but stay firm with your rules and consequences. Despite your best care and understanding, however, know that your child probably needs to see a therapist.
