Children do have occasional tantrums or meltdowns. These outbursts are expressions of frustration or defiance, especially when told to do something not to their liking. But what if your child makes threats or performs acts that are not within their predictable behavior? What if your child gets angry frequently, or has difficulty controlling their temper? Do you placate your child by giving in to their demands? What do you do to calm your child down?
You may not notice, but you may tend to rationalize your child’s anger by actually saying or believing that expressing anger is a good thing. Expressing one’s emotion is of course healthy. Know, however, that it stops from being healthy when the outbursts are baseless, excessive, frequent, and uncontrolled. Rather than make your child think or believe that such outbursts are acceptable, it is best not to justify the behavior, Instead, be the wise and caring parent that you are, note the symptoms and seek professional assistance.
Not every parent is prepared to handle their child’s difficulty in managing their anger. If you feel inadequate, it may cause you to suppress/express anger for your own sake, not your child’s. Using intimidating statements such as “Don’t you dare raise your voice on me!” or “You better stop now or else…” can be your way of showing parental dominance (that usually doesn’t work). Perhaps you feel the necessity to “shut your child up” because people’s opinion about your parenting style matters to you. Instead of helping your child manage their rage, you may just be adding more fuel and igniting their temper to a fiery level.
Even the most behaved child can be angry at times and some children can be naturally stubborn. Anger in children is often caused by a frustrating situation which they feel helpless about. But, there are also children whose anger can have deeper emotional causes, so that long and frequent anger episodes must not be trivialized. It will not help to fuel the anger more, even when you don’t intend to. The best options to douse the heat and put off the raging fury would often come from an educated parent or a child therapist.
