Breaking Marital Barriers through Marriage Counseling
The classic thought of ‘living happily ever after’ has held its fascination for almost every couple. There are those fortunate enough to make it through the years. It doesn’t mean all has been glowing rosy down the marriage lane; only that they are able to appreciate what each has to offer to make the marriage last.
What lovely image this conjures, like a fairy dispensing its magic of happiness. Other couples, however, find it difficult to accommodate each other’s whims and weaknesses and so lose patience with each other. Let it happen often enough and this marriage may soon be rocked by bitterness and regrets. Finding yourself at a crossroad to go on or end a marriage can be nerve wracking. This does not have to be so. Before making any major decision, seek the help of a marriage counselor.
Finding the “Why’s”
Each individual is distinct and naturally, personalities differ. The fact that you became enamored enough to get married means you think you can live with each other. Marriage, however, is not stress-free; expectedly, clashes happen. When the demands of everyday life are high, like imposing discipline on your children and meeting financial obligations, emotions can run high too. Before you know it, you are already snapping at each other.
There are many stressors just as there can be many reasons to defend reactive behavior. You would think that a couple who have been together for some years have already adjusted to each other’s idiosyncrasies. Yet, a daily behavior like leaving clothes on the floor when dressing can be extremely irritating. If you are the house-bound one, you may feel like a “nobody” whose efforts are of no account.
Lacking affirmation often results to feelings of insecurity. You may find yourself being sensitive over non-abrasive comments. A mere hint of admiration about another person, say an efficient co-worker, may already arouse suspicion of trustworthiness; much worse of infidelity.
Poor or lack of communication is a common barrier in marriage. Not knowing how to reach out intensifies frustrations. A knowledgeable outsider like a marriage counselor can see through a maze of problems and guide you in working them out. You may have entrenched yourself in self pity but he/she can draw you out to realize your potentials as a person.
Marriage counseling offers a balanced perspective of your relationship and values. The skills that you will be equipped with will increasingly allow you to go beyond self-introspection to understanding your spouse’ values and where she/he is coming from. Carolina Counseling Services is there to bring you into a “give and take” relationship, a powerful tool to overcome marriage barriers. Get an appointment by phone, text, or e-mail.
