Are you in the midst of a life transition?
In life, change is a given. However, even though people know change is inevitable, many still find it difficult to adjust to it – especially when it means transitioning into a radically different way of life. If you are going through one of life’s transitions and it is proving to be a challenge for you, you are not alone.
Life Transitions for Men and Women
Men go through many transitions. The transition from childhood to puberty, for example, can be a confusing one – both physically and psychologically. Much later in life, as men go into their forties or fifties, they enter into a totally different phase of maturity, and not all are able to accept this passage because it comes with aging and possibly the realization that retirement is closer than they want it to be.
Women also go through certain transitions that would be considered normal: puberty, sexual and social maturity, living away from home, marriage, motherhood, menopause, and aging. Because society places great premium on youth - especially for the females of the species - some women find menopause and aging particularly hard to live with.
For both men and women, some transitions can be more difficult than others. The death of a spouse or a close family member, marriage, divorce or separation, loss of a job, retirement – all of these life events are precursors of transitions that can make a person feel that life is an uphill fight. If you find yourself in any of these demanding circumstances, rest assured that there is a light at the end of the tunnel for you.
Facing Transitions
If you find yourself feeling isolated, that is to be expected too – especially when you have lost a loved one or if your marriage has ended in a divorce. Parents who find themselves living in an empty nest often have feelings of futility as well, and many are surprised they are feeling bereft instead of free.
One of the things that needs to happen for people in the midst of transition is for them to acknowledge their loneliness, grief, or feelings of helplessness. However, help is often needed to face these feelings squarely.
Meeting the Challenge of Life’s Seasons
If you are in a difficult transition phase, you may find it hard to believe that things will fall into place in the not-too-distant future. Times like this, you may find it is easier done with a counselor to assist you through the process.
