You know how incredibly important sleep is to the growth and development of children. The quality and quantity of sleep children need vary on certain factors, especially age. Sleep plays a vital role in every child’s physical and mental health. With enough sleep, your child is ready to face the next day for learning, playing, and other activities.
Your child cannot enjoy the benefits of sufficient sleep if he/she suffers from a sleep problems such as insomnia or nightmares. Nightmares are a common coping mechanism for ongoing changes in life thus your child may experience them from time to time. But, if nightmares persist to haunt your child more often, robbing him/her of precious sleep, it’s time to put an end to the raw terror.
What Nightmares can become
It’s almost impossible to prevent your child from having the next nightmare. You just can’t, however, ignore the nightmarish spell causing your child to suffer sleeplessly in fear. When nothing is done to end the dreadful nightmares, your child may develop a phobia to sleep, inducing insomnia, anxiety, low self-esteem, and poor health. You may start seeing your child avoid bedtime, call to you or get out of bed frequently, or come to get into your bed in the middle of the night.
Every nightmare is a vehicle of crucial emotional challenges your child may be facing. It is not always a sign of a pathological issue. In fact, a nightmare can be an indication of positive adjustment to juvenile challenges such as divorce, academic difficulties, or peer bullying. But, how would you know if you’re uninitiated in interpreting dreams? There could be upsetting issues that can’t be openly expressed. When nightmares persist and their content is becoming too disturbing for your young child, it’s a sign of unresolved conflicts that continue to plague your child even in sleep. Unknown to you, each nightmare spell makes you listen or watch him/her speaking directly to you delivering a hapless call for help.
Help Comes during Waking Hours
Unfortunately, you can’t be there in your child’s dream to defend him/her from the formless ghost or pack of wild animals. You also don’t want your child to be deprived of important sleep because of scary dreams. At a time when your child needs your support, the best you may be able to offer is an empathic reassurance of your presence and possibly a new interpretation to come up with a happy ending for the nightmare. Unfortunately, these usually don’t work to decrease future nightmares, or the child’s fear of going to sleep again.
Just like the story in your child’s fairy tale book, someone has to break the spell. In this case, Carolina Counseling Services contracted therapists may be very helpful, not necessarily with a magic wand, but with expertise on how to decrease the intensity and frequency of your child’s menacing dreams. With resolution to the issue your child is burdened by, your child will never be afraid to sleep anymore. Call now to request an appointment!
